Last week I spent a whole day watching Jim Garner, a very talented wedding and portrait photographer on Creative Live. Creative Live is a site for professionals to learn new techniques to apply to their businesses. There is always a live broadcast running and a variety of learning is available. I am interested in how other professionals perform so I truly enjoyed this particular broadcast. It was so interesting to see such a different style of photographing weddings. Jim uses a story telling style to photograph his weddings and always sells an album of this to his clients. It was also enlightening, no pun intended, to see how he used light to photograph his subjects. Today’s photography has gotten away from using on camera flash. I have been doing a lot of experimenting with natural light, off camera flash, reflectors and video lights int the past year to get different looks from lighting. I LOVE all effects but truly love when the response is “Wow”..that just means I have captured the light in the right way. I should add there is no right or wrong way to light a subject. As long as you achieve the look that pleases both you and your client you have used the correct light. Jim also taught about energy in story telling. Maybe not those exact words but those are the words I will use to showcase the images in this blog. When telling a story to me its about capturing the energy and personality of a particular client or couple. I often hear,” please tell me what to do”, as a response when we are shooting. I learned from this broadcast to “let the client play” . Play relaxes people and allows them to show more of who they are as a couple or individual. Sure, you still have to offer instructional posing at times but it appears to me there is far more energy in images that are light hearted and fun. I guess you should be the judge. The following is a mock engagement session.
